Blooming, Opening, Laughing: A Japanese Welcome to March

Blooming, Opening, Laughing: A Japanese Welcome to March

Every month I look forward to turning the page of my Karhu Studio Kyoto calendar.

March arrived with a message that feels perfectly aligned with the season:

咲く 開く 笑う ほころぶ 花寄り

A poetic line that loosely evokes the feeling of:

Blooming.
Opening.
Laughing.
Tempting with flowery words.

In Japan, seasonal expressions often reflect not only what is happening in nature, but also what is happening in the human heart.

As flowers begin to bloom in early spring, people also begin to open again. The long stillness of winter softens. Conversations become lighter. Smiles come easier.

Even language changes.

“Flowery words” here doesn’t mean manipulation — it speaks to the playful sweetness that often returns with spring. Compliments, laughter, warmth. A kind of seasonal charm.

Spring reminds us that life does not force its way open.

It unfolds.

Petal by petal.

As March begins, may we allow ourselves the same quiet opening — blooming in our own time.
