Different Ritual. Same Heart.

Different Ritual. Same Heart.

Traditionally, matcha is enjoyed as a simple bowl of usucha paired with a single Japanese confection.

There is an elegance to that simplicity that has been preserved through centuries of tea practice.

But around our family table...

Sometimes the sweetest thing is sharing a matcha latte together.

Different ritual.

Same heart.

That is one of the reasons I love tea so much.

It doesn't ask us to recreate a formal tea room every day.

Instead, it gently teaches us to bring the spirit of tea into wherever life happens.

Sometimes that is a tatami room.

Sometimes it's a kitchen table with family talking story.

When I'm home, I often find myself making matcha lattes for everyone.

Not because it's elaborate.

But because it's a simple way of saying,

"I love you."

One of the greatest privileges of growing older is realizing that the people who once cared for us eventually become the people we get to care for.

My parents spent years pouring into me.

Teaching me.

Encouraging me.

Introducing me to the world of Japanese tea.

Now, one of my greatest joys is preparing tea for them. Total full circle moment.

There's a beautiful Japanese expression that captures this perfectly:

ζ©ι€γ‚Š (On-okuri | γŠγ‚“γŠγγ‚Š)

Unlike 恩返し (ongaeshi), which means returning a kindness directly, on-okuri encourages us to let the love we've received continue moving through us by caring for others.

I think tea naturally embodies that idea.

Every bowl is an offering.

Every latte is an act of hospitality. (because truly it is work sometimes >.<")

Every shared cup becomes a quiet expression of gratitude.

Whether your family is by blood or by choice, I hope you take time to prepare something beautiful for someone who has helped shape your life.

Not because they expect it.

But because love, much like tea, is best when shared.

Here's to passing kindness forward.

One bowl.

One latte.

One generation at a time.
