Haupia & Matcha: A Taste of Hawaiʻi Meets Kyoto

Haupia & Matcha: A Taste of Hawaiʻi Meets Kyoto

Some pairings feel almost effortless.

Today's pairing brought together two places that have profoundly shaped my life: Hawaiʻi and Japan. 🤍🦋✨

Alongside a bowl of Jyoraku Matcha, I enjoyed a piece of haupia—a traditional Hawaiian dessert made from coconut milk, gently sweetened and set into a soft, pudding-like confection.

Unlike many desserts, haupia is wonderfully restrained.

Its delicate coconut flavor and light sweetness don't overwhelm the palate. Instead, they complement ceremonial matcha beautifully, allowing the matcha's rich umami, gentle vegetal notes, and pleasant bittersweet finish to remain the focus.

This balance reminds me of one of tea's quiet lessons.

Life is rarely only sweet.

Nor is it only bitter.

The beauty often lies in experiencing both together.

Japanese tea ceremony embraces this harmony through the pairing of tea and confection. The sweet prepares the palate, allowing the tea to reveal itself more fully. In return, the tea deepens our appreciation of the sweet.

That same rhythm appears throughout life.

Moments of challenge make joy more meaningful.

Moments of rest help us appreciate hard work.

Bitterness and sweetness are not competing forces—they complete one another.

A Japanese proverb beautifully captures another part of this journey:

流れる水は腐らず (Nagareru mizu wa kusarazu) TRUTH.

"Flowing water never stagnates."

Like flowing water, we are invited to keep moving forward with openness and trust. New opportunities, unexpected friendships, and quiet blessings often appear when we're willing to follow life's gentle current.

Today, that current looked like a bowl of matcha, a piece of haupia, and a reminder that some of life's most meaningful moments are found in simple rituals shared between cultures.

May your day be filled with beautiful surprises—and just the right balance of bitter and sweet.
