Travel Tip: Brew Great Japanese Green Tea Anywhere 🍃⛴️
Share
Some people never travel without headphones.
Others never leave home without a good book.
For me?
It's Japanese green tea.
On a recent trip aboard the Victoria Clipper, I found myself craving the comforting taste of sencha as we crossed the Salish Sea. Fortunately, I'd tucked a sencha tea bag from Ippodo into my bag before leaving.
Although I almost always reach for loose-leaf tea when I'm at home, I genuinely appreciate having a well-made tea bag while traveling. It offers convenience without sacrificing the calming ritual of preparing a thoughtful cup of tea.
One challenge while traveling is that hot water is often served at a rolling boil—far too hot for most Japanese green teas.
That's where my favorite little trick comes in.
The "1/4 Method"
If your water is too hot:
- Pour out about ¼ of the hot water.
- Replace it with ¼ room-temperature water.
- Brew your sencha.
It's an easy way to bring the water closer to an ideal brewing temperature without needing a thermometer—or waiting several minutes for it to cool.
The result is a sweeter, more balanced cup that lets the tea's gentle umami shine.
For me, these small rituals make travel feel more intentional.
A ferry becomes a quiet tea room.
A waiting area becomes a moment to pause.
A simple paper cup becomes an invitation to slow down.
Beautiful tea doesn't always require perfect conditions.
Sometimes all you need is good leaves, hot water, and the willingness to make space for a few peaceful minutes.
So wherever your next adventure takes you, I hope you'll bring a little tea along for the ride.
It has a wonderful way of turning the journey into part of the destination.
