Welcoming a New Month: Trust the Small Beginnings

Welcoming a New Month: Trust the Small Beginnings

Every month I look forward to seeing what message Karhu Studio Kyoto has chosen for its calendar.

Some are playful.

Some are poetic.

Some ask me to slow down and sit with them for a while.

This month's reads:

"Skinny smoke makes a better fire."

At first, I wasn't entirely sure what to make of it.

But the longer I reflected, the more it reminded me of tea.

When we prepare Japanese tea, almost everything begins quietly. I know this sounds strange, but I take 1-3 deep breaths before I start.

The water warms.

The kettle hums.

Steam rises almost imperceptibly.

Nothing is rushed.

Nothing announces itself....okay I guess the water does sometimes. 🙃

Yet from those humble beginnings comes warmth, nourishment, and connection.

Life often unfolds the same way.

We sometimes believe that change must arrive dramatically to matter.

That healing needs a breakthrough.

That success should happen overnight.

But the most enduring transformations are usually much muuuuch quieter.

A single habit repeated every morning.

A daily walk.

One honest conversation.

One bowl of tea.

As I continue building Flowering Waters, this message feels especially meaningful.

Every tasting.

Every class.

Every customer.

Every post. Every review.

Each one may seem small on its own.

But together they become something much larger than I could ever create all at once.

Perhaps this month is inviting us to trust the gentle beginnings.

To stop waiting for a roaring fire before believing in ourselves.

To tend the little ember already in front of us.

Tea reminds me that patience isn't the absence of progress.

Sometimes, patience is the progress.

May this month bring you steady hands, a peaceful heart, and the courage to believe that even the smallest spark can become something extraordinary.
